About

In the spring of 2012, while their children were in school, Mary Olson and Sue Vandervort went on daily walks throughout Ottawa and talked about plans – BIG plans. Mary, on one of her now-famous whims, suggested that they reopen longtime Ottawa establishment Carretto’s as an Irish-Italian pub and bowling alley. While that didn’t come to fruition, it set the tone for future ideas, and one cooked up by the duo a little later seemed like their ticket to the world of entrepreneurship. When Mary and Sue learned that another small business, The Classroom, was closing, they jumped in with both feet. Thus was Rock Paper Scissors born of a desire to maintain the legacy and necessity of an educational store in town. Following a summer of unbridled buying and feverish construction, Rock Paper Scissors quietly opened its doors on August 20, 2012. Although the business has moved away from primarily providing teacher supplies and into the realm of board games, toys, crafts, and much more, the store’s original aim still remains true: to provide fun and educational resources for children of all ages. Rock Paper Scissors continues to remain committed to helping to further children’s EDUCATION, encouraging their IMAGINATION, and providing everyone with INSPIRATION. Two years later, Mary and Sue are thrilled to be expanding into their own building. With double the retail floor space, they are looking forward to offering even more hands-on experiences and greater selections of educational resources. In addition, with a new open space for classes, workshops, and events, Rock Paper Scissors has set its sights on becoming a premier family-friendly destination.
